Choosing a profession is one of the most important decisions in the life of every person. If initially there is a desire to connect your life with the electrical industry, then everything is not so simple here either. In this field of human activity, there are many different professions, one can say areas of activity that have their own distinctive features. In this article, we give a brief description of the profession of an electrician for maintenance of substations.

To begin with, let's consider what this profession is and what the duties of an electrician for servicing substations are. Surely everyone knows about such an object as electrical distribution substation.

Why are substations needed? Distribution substations serve to receive electrical energy, convert it and distribute it to consumers or other substations.

Substations have a large number of various electrical equipment and devices that ensure the uninterrupted operation of this equipment and protect it from damage in case of emergencies - power and instrument transformers, high-voltage switches of various types, disconnectors, load switches, separators and short circuits, high-voltage fuses , arresters, capacitor banks, reactors, relay protection and automation devices.

In order to ensure the reliable operation of this facility, it is necessary to constantly monitor the operating mode and, in the event of any deviations from the normal operating mode, take prompt measures to normalize it.

Therefore, the maintenance of the substation is carried out by specially trained workers - substation maintenance electricians. In order to understand who a substation maintenance electrician is, consider his main responsibilities:

    control over the operation of the equipment. During his shift, the electrician constantly monitors the operating mode of both individual elements of equipment and devices, and the substation as a whole. It fixes the load on outgoing connections, supply consumers or adjacent substations, the voltage on the buses of all voltage classes, the frequency of the working network; exercises control over various devices and devices (substation battery chargers, equipment heating and cooling devices, communication devices, etc.);

    liquidation of accidents and technological violations;

    implementation of operational maintenance of the substation: operational switching for regime purposes, as well as for bringing equipment out for repair;

    participation in the organization of the safe performance of work, in particular, the performance of work on the preparation of workplaces and the admission of teams to perform work on the territory of the substation.

Depending on the voltage class, the size of the substation, there are several ways to carry out maintenance of substations. If the enterprise has several small substations or substations where the ASDU system is implemented, then maintenance of these facilities can be carried out "at home". That is, an electrician can be at home and, in case of emergencies or the need for operational switching or other work, arrives at one of the serviced objects.

If this is a large substation that feeds many responsible consumers, then the operational maintenance of this facility is carried out by permanent service personnel. As a rule, the maintenance of the substation is carried out by one electrician. At large facilities, where there is a large amount of equipment and, accordingly, a large amount of work, there may be two operational workers per shift.

Each profession has its own nuances, which can only be learned in the process of work. I will depart from the generally accepted interpretations of this profession and talk a little about this profession based on my personal experience as an electrician servicing substations.

The first question that interests a person who has expressed a desire to work at an electrical substation as a service personnel is how to get to the substation?

There is no highly specialized profession of an electrician for servicing substations in universities and technical schools as such. In order to work at a substation as maintenance personnel, in addition to having an electrical engineering education (in some cases, a technical education in another specialty is allowed), it is necessary to undergo specialized training.

Many power supply companies, which operate a large number of electrical substations, organize training of personnel in the enterprise. The employee undergoes specialized training in accordance with the approved program, internship and duplication directly at the workplace - at one of the substations (groups of substations) of the enterprise.

In the event that there are several substations on the balance sheet of the enterprise and the number of service personnel is small, then the organization of training at the expense of the enterprise is inappropriate. In this case, the management of the enterprise gives preference to those employees who have experience in the operational maintenance of substations. Therefore, very often a person is faced with a problem: there is a job, there is an electrical engineering education, but without specialized training or experience they don’t take it. What to do in this case? There are several ways.

The first is to be trained in a specialized training center. If there is one, you can acquire the practical skills of the profession of an operative worker.

The second method involves searching for an enterprise that trains personnel who maintain substations. It is possible that at this enterprise there will be such working conditions that do not satisfy you, for example, remoteness from your place of residence, low pay, but at this enterprise you will be able to get training and gain experience as a substation maintenance electrician.

Then, with the acquired baggage of knowledge and experience (including those recorded in the work book, without which it is now difficult to get a desired profession), you can move on to a more prestigious job at another enterprise.

As for training in this profession, it all depends on the availability of education and work experience. If an employee has experience as a substation maintenance electrician, then the period of his training is relatively short.

In this case, he needs to familiarize himself with the scheme and layout of the equipment of one or more substations, depending on the nature of the work (permanent service personnel, maintenance of substations at home, work in an operational mobile team), and also obtain (if available, confirm) the appropriate group for electrical safety.

In the absence of experience in substation maintenance, the newly hired employee undergoes full training according to a specialized program.

The future electrician gets acquainted with all the elements of electrical equipment, studies those installed at the substation, studies instructions for the operational maintenance of the substation, emergency response, organization of work in electrical installations - in general, he studies everything that he will encounter in the course of work.

The final stage of training in the above two cases is an internship followed by duplication at the workplace, as well as checking the availability of practical skills for eliminating emergencies and technological violations at the substation, which is one of the most important criteria for the readiness of an electrician to independently maintain the facility.

The profession of a substation maintenance electrician is interesting, intense and at the same time very responsible and dangerous. The main task of an electrician is to ensure the normal operation of the equipment and, accordingly, a reliable power supply to consumers, while observing all labor protection standards, in particular, ensuring personal safety in the process of performing work.

The complexity of the work and the amount of responsibility depends on the size of the substation and the category of consumers. If this is a small substation, for example, 35/10/0.4 kV, which feeds mainly consumers of the third category, then work at such a substation does not differ in variety and saturation, as they say - peace and quiet.

If this is a large nodal substation that feeds responsible consumers of the first category, as well as several adjacent substations, then you will not be bored at such work. Every day there is work - performing repairs of equipment, shutting down equipment to perform work at consumers, eliminating minor malfunctions and, most importantly, controlling the mode of operation of the electrical network, which in turn affects the operation of the unified energy system of the region (region) as a whole.

Often there are various emergencies: damage to one of the supply lines, equipment malfunctions and deviations from the normal operation of relay protection and automation devices, etc.

In addition, all elements of the substation equipment are subject to periodic revision and repair (current, overhaul, elimination of faults in case of emergencies). The role of a substation maintenance electrician during repairs is one of the key ones. The substation maintenance electrician is involved in organizing and carrying out work at the substation.

If it is necessary to carry out any work, the task of the electrician is to coordinate the conclusion for repair of one or another element of equipment or a section of an electrical installation with consumer enterprises.

Before the direct start of work, the electrician must prepare the necessary switching forms for the production of operational switching to bring the repaired equipment into repair. Next, the electrician takes the equipment out for repair and allows the team to perform this or that work on the territory of the substation.

You can often hear positive feedback in the direction of electricians for equipment repair, maintenance of relay protection and automation devices, and other workers who provide installation, repair, configuration, verification of certain elements of equipment or devices. But not a word is mentioned about the substation maintenance electrician. In fact, the preparatory work for repairs, that is, what the electrician does for servicing substations, is half, and in some cases most of the work.

A specialist in the maintenance of relay protection and automation devices checks the protection of one of the outgoing lines within an hour, and the entire process of organizing work (coordination, preparation for operational switching, putting equipment into repair and commissioning, admission to work and other work) in general The complexity lasts several hours, or even more, depending on the specific situation and the role of the connection at the substation that is being taken out for repair.

For example, if it is necessary to repair the bus disconnector of one of the connections, then to perform these works, it is necessary to bring the entire section (system) of tires into repair. In this case, the repair will be carried out within an hour or two, and the time required to bring the tire section (system) into operation, including preparatory work, will be 6-8 hours.

Thus, we can conclude that the profession of a substation maintenance electrician is an important and responsible profession. This employee makes a significant contribution to the process of organizing the work of the energy supply company as a whole, which is comparable to the role of a specialist in the repair of equipment, communications and telemechanics.

Is there a perspective?

An equally important question is about the prospect of working as an electrician for the maintenance of substations. Many, probably, objected, but is it worth it to breed such an extensive story about such, let's say, not very noticeable profession?

If we are talking about a power supply company, then the position of a substation maintenance electrician can be the first step in a career in this enterprise.

There are several possible career paths for a substation maintenance electrician. A substation maintenance electrician is an operational staff, so the next career step can be a profession in the operational maintenance of enterprise facilities: a dispatcher, a senior dispatcher, an engineer of the operational dispatch service of an enterprise.

Also, an electrician can go for a promotion in the substation service, where there are positions such as foreman, head of substation groups, site manager, substation service engineer and higher positions.

The latter, in the course of his labor activity, relies mainly on his theoretical experience, which was acquired at an educational institution, while an engineer who worked as an electrician for substation maintenance solves problems based on practical experience in servicing substation equipment, which is more effective, for example, when compiling various projects of work in electrical installations of the enterprise.

Transformer operating modes:

1. The conditions that determine the normal mode of transformers are: rated power, rated voltage, rated winding currents and frequency specified in the transformer passport and normal conditions of the cooling medium.

2. The operation of transformers is allowed provided that the windings are protected by valve arresters or voltage limiters in accordance with the PTE.

3. Continuous operation of the transformer is allowed at a power not exceeding the rated voltage when the voltage supplied to the corresponding branch of the HV winding is 10% higher than the rated voltage of this branch of the winding.

In this case, the voltage on any winding of the transformer should not exceed the highest operating voltage for a given voltage class indicated in Table 2:

Table No. 2 - Voltage class

4. Long-term operation of transformers equipped with on-load tap-changers with a load equal to the rated power of the windings on all branches, except for the winding branches, is allowed below minus 5% of the rated voltage.

5. The inclusion of a transformer in the network must be carried out by a push to full voltage at any sub-zero temperature.

6. Transformers allow long-term current overload of each winding by 5% of the rated current of the branch, if the voltage on the branch does not exceed the rated one.

7. In emergency modes, short-term overload of transformers in excess of the rated current is allowed for all cooling systems, regardless of the duration and value of the previous load and the temperature of the cooling medium within the following limits:

Table No. 3 - Overloading of transformers in excess of the rated current

Emergency modes:

1. The emergency mode of operation of the transformer is considered to be such a mode in which it cannot work for a long time, since a shutdown in one of the parameters can lead to damage to the transformer.

2. In case of operational switching and a sudden decrease in load, the voltage increase on the transformers, depending on the duration, should not exceed the values \u200b\u200bgiven in Table No. 4:

Table No. 4 - Time of allowable overvoltage

Number of voltage surges lasting 20 min. should not be more than 50 within one year. The number of voltage surges with a duration of 20 s should not exceed 100 during the service life of the transformer in accordance with GOST 11677-85.

At the same time, the number of voltage surges should not be more than 15 during the year and more than two - lasting no more than one day.
